Frequently Asked Questions for Online Therapy in Texas

What is telehealth/online therapy?

Telehealth is access to your providers, such as a mental health therapist or psychotherapist online or remotely. This is also known as Online Therapy.

Can I be in another state?

No, unfortunately, you will need to be a resident of Texas and currently in the state to receive therapy.

What is secured video sessions/online therapy?

Secured video sessions are similar to zoom, facetime or skype. You are able to meet with your therapist live over video. We use a secure video platform (theraplatform). Our Online therapy is HIPAA compliant. We take every precaution to keep your information confidential.

Do I have to use my computer? Can I use a smartphone or tablet?

No, but you can use a computer, tablet or your smartphone. Be sure to use the test feature to ensure that everything is working appropriately prior to your session. Any smartphone, such as an iPhone, android phone, etc. Any tablet such as an iPad, Samsung tablet, kindle, etc.

How do I prepare for my first online therapy session?

FORMS: Your therapist should have sent you forms to review, complete, and sign (electronically). Please log into theraplatform (you should have received an email). Be sure you have completed these forms. SET UP ACCOUNT: The system will prompt you to set up a credit card that will be billed for your sessions. PRIVACY: Find a quiet, safe place where no one will overhear your session. We recommend using earbuds or headphones to reduce what is overhead (it also reduces the feedback on your device/the echo that can happen sometimes when people are talking). It is inappropriate to have someone else in the room with you. However, if you would like to bring a loved one into therapy, please discuss this with your therapist prior to the session. QUESTIONS: You are encouraged to bring any questions you have. Sometimes bringing notes to therapy can help you remember your questions or the topics you have for therapy.

Why online therapy instead of in person therapy?

Convenience! The number one reason that many people prefer video session over in-person sessions is convivence. Many of us have a full plate, i.e. working full time, going to school, school activities, sports, long commutes, volunteering, and many, many other commitments. It is easy to log in and receive counseling/therapy from the comfort of your own home, office, or vehicle. There are others of us who have difficulty getting around due to disabilities or lack of transportation, so online therapy can be a great fit. If you find that teletherapy is not a good option for you, your therapist will provide referrals for other therapy options.

How do I schedule my online therapy appointment?

Please email telementalhealhtexas@gmail.com or call 972-372-9777 or contact the specific therapist through the contact information on the About page.
