Breaking the Myths: Empowering Survivors of Domestic Violence

April 11, 2025

Understanding the truth about domestic violence can be the first step toward healing and empowerment.

Dear Survivor,

The path to healing begins with knowledge and self-compassion. Unfortunately, there are countless myths about domestic violence that do more harm than good, leaving survivors feeling misunderstood or even doubting their own experiences. Today, we’re breaking down some of the most pervasive myths to empower you and those who support you.

Myth 1: Domestic violence only happens if there’s physical abuse

Many people believe abuse must leave physical scars for it to “count.” But abuse comes in many forms—including emotional, psychological, financial, and verbal. These forms of harm can be just as traumatic as physical violence, even though they aren’t always visible.

Myth 2: “It’s my fault this is happening to me”

This painful myth is often reinforced by abusers, who blame their behavior on their victims. But the truth is simple and powerful: abuse is never the survivor’s fault. Every individual has the right to respect, safety, and love.

Myth 3: “If it were that bad, you’d just leave”

Leaving an abusive relationship is not only emotionally challenging but also often dangerous. Survivors face complex barriers, including fear for their safety, lack of resources, or financial dependency. Healing begins when you take steps that feel safe and manageable for you. Your journey is your own, and there’s no rush or “right way” to proceed.

Moving Forward with Hope

You are not alone, and you are not defined by what you have been through. Each step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to a place of peace, safety, and empowerment. Surround yourself with a supportive community, arm yourself with facts, and trust that healing is possible.
