Survivors often carry the weight of harmful beliefs shaped by abuse—beliefs we have the power to help them rewrite.
Dear Colleague,
Survivors of domestic violence and relationship abuse often carry deeply ingrained beliefs about themselves, born from their trauma. Phrases like “I am powerless” or “I don’t deserve love” may echo in their minds, shaping their self-perception and outlook. But the good news? Therapy offers a profound opportunity to rewrite those narratives and instill hope-filled alternatives.
Reframing Trauma Narratives
One powerful step in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse is recognizing and helping them challenge these negative cognitions during therapy. When a survivor identifies a belief like “I am powerless,” guide them toward affirming alternatives such as “I am strong” or “I deserve safety.” This process doesn’t merely change words; it transforms how survivors view themselves and their ability to rebuild a life of confidence and peace. Utilizing EMDR with these identified negative cognitions (NCs), can be powerful in facilitating shifts in these negative thoughts.
Tools to Support Your Work

Why Reframing Matters
By addressing these cognitions with care, we help survivors piece together a narrative that no longer centers on shame or helplessness. Instead, they begin to see themselves as people who are courageous, deserving, and inherently valuable. Each session becomes a step closer to fostering not just healing—but empowerment.
